What is FIRE?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The core idea: save and invest aggressively until your portfolio can sustainably fund your living expenses using the 4% safe withdrawal rule — meaning you withdraw 4% of your portfolio annually without running out of money. Your "FIRE number" is your annual expenses multiplied by 25 (the inverse of 4%). Once your portfolio hits that number, you're financially independent and work becomes optional.
