Why savings rate matters more than income

Your savings rate — not your income — is the biggest predictor of how quickly you reach financial independence. Someone earning $50,000/year who saves 30% will reach FI faster than someone earning $150,000/year who saves 5%. This is because your savings rate determines both how much you accumulate and how much you'll need in retirement (since your expenses define your FI number). A higher savings rate compounds in two ways: more money saved, and a lower number needed to be financially free.
