We ran the same gross salary through the 2026 national income-tax rules of 18 countries. At $60,000 the gap between the best and worst country is $17,768 a year, before anyone pays rent. Here is the ranking, and five findings that surprised us.
Salary converted at rates from Fri, 18 Sep 2026, taxed under each country's 2026 rules, converted back to USD. Green under 5%, blue under 15%, red above.
The UAE and Saudi Arabia keep 100% of a salary at every level. The UAE's 9% corporate tax applies to business profits above AED 375,000, not to employees.
Under the new regime a salaried person pays nothing up to ₹12.75 lakh (₹12 lakh taxable after the ₹75,000 standard deduction). Just above that line, marginal relief caps the tax at whatever you earn above ₹12 lakh, which means every extra rupee goes to tax until about ₹1,269,000 taxable. A ₹13 lakh salary keeps ₹1,275,000: the ₹25,000 of tax is exactly the ₹25,000 it earned above the line.
Between £100,000 and £125,140 the personal allowance is withdrawn, £1 for every £2 earned. Income tax on the next pound at £110,000 is effectively 60%, higher than the 45% top rate, before National Insurance.
Since January 2026 (Law 15.270/2025) monthly pay up to R$5,000 is free of income tax. A R$60,000 salary now pays R$0; at R$100,000 the effective rate is 16.6%.
The Nigeria Tax Act 2025 exempts the first ₦800,000 and taxes the rest in six bands up to 25%. A $10,000-equivalent salary now pays an effective 16.7%.
